What are some ECs that will enhance my resume if I want to major in English and later on become a lawyer?
Answered

I am currently an incoming junior at my high school and my lists of ECs are:

-UIL Journalism

-UIL CX Debate

-UIL Current Events

-Officer position at my Student Council (I spend the most time on this one since it is very demanding and I have to stay every day after school for it)

-Book Club

What you're doing right now seems great, but if you really want to expand and do even more, some ideas are:

- Participate in community service (volunteering at local library, tutoring on UPchieve in English, etc)

- Join yearbook (they often do a lot of writing)

- School newspaper/announcements (if they have)

- Apply for and try to earn a position on the book club's council

- Take advanced English courses such as AP Lit and Lang to demonstrate skill

Anyways, good luck and hope this helped!

All these types of ECs are good because they expand upon your writing ability, oratory prowess, and leadership. I don't know what UIL so what is it and why would anyone else on College Vine know what that is supposed to be? And does CX mean?

If had to recommend some course work or other ECs to get involved with it would be

-AP Government & Politics

-Some advanced coursework in Constitutional Law either at the HS level or an online college course

-Getting involved in "We the People" which is a National annual competition between high schools competing at the District level, State level and National level.

-Aim to be some sort of editor of either your School News Paper or some journal. Why? Because once you get to Law School the top dog always is the Editor of the Law Review

-Do some sort of community service that requires you be Board Member. Like a Student rep for the City Council, or Chair of the Library literacy committee, or some sort of public service position that is trying to expand some good guidelines or policies within your hometown community, like chairing the DEI-committee, or Land Use committee for Natural Resources.

There really isn't such a thing as a pre-law major because like Med schools and B-schools , Law Schools really don't care very much what your undergrad major is. The mostly care if you have a great mind and are a critical thinker. Your high undergrad GPA and high LSAT score of 170+ will reveal your potential to pursue the law as graduate student more than your major. Just keep in mind that top law schools fully expect you to have some productive gap year experience prior to matriculating. At least that's the case for Top 14 law schools.

If you are in a rush to become a lawyer there are some schools that do a 3+3 BA/JD or BS/JD program. But those are not T14 schools but lesser law schools in general. e.g. Oregon State U. and Lewis & Clark Law School. I think Columbia and UPenn have something sort of like a 3+3 but you can only apply in your 3 year of undergrad, not as an incoming freshman. And there is a fixed amount of seats which I think is either 1 spot or 2 seats for each program. So that's like 1 or 2 out of L1 class of 300-400 matriculates. That's very stiff competition.

Good luck.

Here are some more EC ideas:

- Moot court and/or mock trial. If your school does not have a club, you can start one or possibly join another club in your school district

- Start a blog about topics in law that interest you

- Local spoken word poetry slams

- State Senate Page program if your legal interest relates to politics

- The summer activities listed here

Hope this helps!
