Does helping edit an unpublished book count as an extracurricular activity?
Answered

Someone asked me to review a book they plan to publish soon, and this summer I've been working on editing it and giving feedback to this person. (I'm not too involved to be considered a co-author.) I was wondering if this would count as an extracurricular activity?

Hi @jumariq. Yes, it would be considered an EC activity. If you did contribute to the book in some way, such as editing or reviewing. I think it would be considered as a Tier 2c according to CollegeVine:

"Tier 2c: Very strong

I did the equivalent of ANY of the following:

I served as an associate editor or equivalent leader for a school publication."

In any case, you should request that the author include your name as an editor and reviewer in the credits. That way, colleges will see that you are already involved in book publishing. In your application, include the title of the book as well as your name.

I hope the information helps.

This would count as an extracurricular activity, and a good one at that! If you could put a link to the book in your extracurricular description once it's published, that would be even better. Hope this helps!
