How much will it hurt me if I don't have a class rank on my transcript?
Answered

I recently changed high schools after the first semester of Junior year. My new school, however, does not rank students unless they have attended the school for 2 years. So, the new school will not put a rank on my transcript. The thing is, I know for a fact that I would have made the top 25 at my school (top 2.5% of the graduating class). Only me and my counselor know this information and she will not put this rank on the transcript as it is against school policy. How much will this affect me?

Oftentimes, there is a section on applications where you can mark that you are unranked among your classmates, or that your school chooses not to rank students. Thus, the lack of information provided in this field is not your fault and will neither help you nor hurt you. Obviously, it would be most beneficial for you if your school could provide you your rank, but you can’t do much about it, so try not to worry too much. Plus, since you have excelled in your classes, colleges will see that, instead, and be able to make good conclusions about your work ethic and talent (and class rank). 😊

The simple fix is to write a sentence or two about this in the add'l information section of the common app.

"I was ranked in the top 2.5% of my class prior to transferring schools. Currently I do not have a rank because students at the new school are required to have a 2 year residency prior to being ranked."

Hope that helps.

Good luck.
