My Extracurriculars vs My Prospective Major
Answered

Hello,

I am a rising high school senior who wants to major in applied mathematics. Throughout high school, I have not really done any extracurriculars directly related to mathematics, but I have been dedicated to a few not related to maths. Does not doing any ECs related to my major hurt my chances of getting into my prospective major, and are there any suggestions (apart from tutoring) of activities I can do related to a math major?

This really depends on your school - some colleges don't even ask you to apply to a major and many don't require it until a year or so into school. In both of these cases, being involved during college with math programs will have a lot more sway on applications than high school activities. I'd recommend taking on tangentially mathematical roles in your current EC's like treasurer - this is a great way to demonstrate some math abilities and leadership potential. Math olympiad is a great option, but maybe check out tutoring math (volunteer or paid). This is a great way to build a resume while still being related to math.

You could start by taking a AMC 12.

https://www.maa.org/math-competitions/american-mathematics-contest-12-amc-12#:~:text=The%20AMC%2012%20is%20a,not%20allowed%20starting%20in%202008.

This helps you get into AIME which if you do good on, you can join math olympiad.

You could tutor kids on math to show passion. Show yourself doing math competitions.
