Hi there,
I am heavily involved in my community and have a passion for comp sci. I plan to apply as a computer science major to top colleges across the US.
According to College Vine and several other admission advice websites, developing a spike seems to be useful in college admissions. Currently, I think I have two mini spikes:
Service:
- President of National Honors Society
- President of Student-led volunteer club
- VP of Student Body
- VP of Newspaper Club
- Outstanding Delegate and Bill at Youth in Government
- Learn To Be tutor
STEM:
- 1st in a statewide engineering design challenge
- Top-ranked in a previous summer program
- President of Coding Club
- VP of Flight Club
- Currently pursuing an AI specialization in Coursera
To any who have experience with applicant profiles, do you think that starting a non-profit geared towards helping elementary and middle schoolers be introduced to new STEM concepts be helpful in combining these interests into a powerful single spike?
I have been thinking about doing this for some time and think it could be done successfully in my community. The concern is rather not motivation but the time since the admission cycle is fast approaching.
I apologize for the length of this question and appreciate all who take the time to answer! Sorry and big thanks!
To your question, yes that would absolutely make you stand out against other students. Another way you can make yourself stand out is intern with places that are related in your field, which will allow you to network but also demonstrate your interest in said field to said colleges.
To keep this community safe and supportive:
Ok, first...wow. Love the titles. Colleges will love the experience and how it is relevant to your goals even more. So tell them why you joined the clubs, what you accomplished, and what it means to you. Then corroborate your experience. Think proof - not a puff piece.
