Hello! For some reason, my chance percentage falls considerably when I switch my intended major from "Geography and Cartography" to "Geology and Earth Sciences" in my profile. Here are my stats, can someone please explain me what is wrong with it and how does it not fill into "Geology and Earth Sciences" description? And additionally, what of the two should I take, considering that I want to take the one that I enjoy more (Earth Science) but have more chance in admissions when taking G and C.
GPA: 3.88/4.0
SAT: 1500 (750+750)
APs: Environmental Science, Human Geography, Comparative Government and Politics (all 5)
Extracurriculars: Gold in IGeO, victory at National School Debate Championship, some summer programs, tutoring geography at school (no-profit) and active participation in educational non-profit. I will also take part in IESO (International Earth Science Olympiad) at the end of August if it helps.
Some context: I'm planning to major in STEM so Geology and Earth Sciences would have been the best choice personally, but it seems like my profile fits into another major more and I will have more chance at getting admitted if I choose Geography and Cartography, even though I don't like it as much.
As others have said, certain schools within a university can have lower acceptance rates than the university as a whole. While the CollegeVine chancing engine is quite accurate, one thing to keep in mind is that the engine can't compute how your demonstrated interest and spike can boost your chances.
Since you demonstrate a strong spike in geology and earth sciences through your ECs, your chances of admission to the major will higher than predicted. I recommend applying to it as your first choice, and you can list Geology and Cartography as a second choice major if a school allows you to do that. Hope this helps!
Hi @crove! At some colleges, admissions are major specific, meaning that due to the competitive nature of some majors, not everyone who applys for the major can have it. It seems that Geology and Earth Sciences is a more competitive major at your choice schools than Geography. The more people that apply to a program, the lower your chances are of acceptance.
To keep this community safe and supportive:
Some schools within the university are more competitive than others. For example, the lowest range of the ACT at a university I am applying for is a 25, but for admittance into their engineering school, they appear to expect 30-33 on the act.
