SAT help
Answered

Ok so I’m going to be a senior and took the sat in March 2022 and scored a 1190 and will be re taking it in aug. However any practice tests I take I score below 1210 and am unable to increase my score. I can’t afford to take prep classes and am only using free resources including khan academy and college board plus the books. Any advice on increasing your score?

im in the same boat as you, but my math tutor told me khan academy is one of the best free resources you can use because collegeboard actually owns khan academy and collegeboard runs the sat, i hope that is anything

Hi @auppu!

The first thing you should do is isolate the areas you need to improve. For example, are you having trouble with the material? Or just the timed aspect of the test? Focus your study sessions on specific sections that are bringing down your score and make sure to take plenty of practice tests until you feel comfortable with the timer.

Khan academy is a great resource, but make sure you're using your time efficiently. That is, focus on the lessons relevant to what you most need to improve on. The practice tests will give you a good idea of what you're struggling most in, and from there you can use your study time to improve your understanding of those concepts.

Good luck! Let me know if you have any questions.

I would recommend finding practice tests (there are some free online, or you could get a prep book). Then you can do a section of questions (like 1-10), and check your answers. If the resource you're using has explanations, work through the problem/question again while keeping the explanation in mind. If there isn't an explanation, ask a friend or parent to help you/explain it! That way, you're not just torturing yourself with a stream of incorrect answers that you don't understand are wrong.

Bonus: There are categories of questions for each section of the test. (For example, in the calculator math section, questions are in categories of Heart of Algebra, Problem Solving and Data Analysis, Passport to Advanced Math, and Other.) After taking a practice test, see which category you seem to score worst at, and focus on improving there! (Works for me anyways haha!)

Good luck!

Have you tried practicing on Khan academy? It's completely free and it's connected with College Board so the practice questions on there will be very similar to the ones on the real SAT. It is personalized to what you need to work on the most. I find it really helpful for me personally so I think it might be helpful for you too.

Hope this helps you!

I don't prefer to take prep classes because you can do everything by yourself. There are official tests and QAS on Reddit, please solve all of them. Also, Khan Academy is a very useful resource. You say that you take around 1200 on the practice tests. That means you make a lot of mistakes. When I solve an SAT practice test, I get happy when I make mistakes because they show my weaknesses. I would recommend you to find every mistake you make, understand your mistakes, and learn what was the right answer. Also, what I would recommend to you is that categorize your mistakes- which I find very effective. Good luck.

I say definitely try to narrow down the areas you are struggling with the most and do extra practice on them. For example, if in the reading section, you struggle with history passages, go on khan and do more practice on that. Also, make sure you have consistent strategies that you are using so all your hard work is practical. You got this!!:)

Try to focus on the sections that you're not scoring as well in. (ie Math or Reading or Writing, and you could be even more specific about which type of math/reading/writing question)

Make sure you're understanding concepts instead of just constantly completing problems. The key to effective studying is to understand your mistakes.

Also, it's important to take practice tests like the actual test (timing, breaks, environment, etc.)

You'll do great in August!
