Admissions Advice

Ivy leagues with a 3.8
Answered

I'm a rising senior who is applying to some ivies and top 20s next admissions cycle.

I have pretty strong ecs (four big leadership positions at school, a freelance writing gig, multiple state and national awards, internships and summer programs with esteemed newspapers). I also have a 1500 sat, which is high for my background based on Collegevine. I have a 4.8 weighted GPA because I will have taken 11 ap courses by the end of senior year.

But because of mental health issues throughout high school and health problems in my family, my grades took a dive and I now have a 3.8 unweighted out of 4.0. I understand that there's a section where you can explain low grades, but then again admissions next year will be ultra competitive. How badly do you think this will hurt my chances of admission into top schools?

I'm assuming that when you said " I also have a 1500 sat, which is high for my background", your demographic is either BIPOC or LatinA.

If that is the case, then I think that your 3.8 UWGPA will not be too detrimental to your overall academic narrative. Since you have taken 11 APs, that does show some serious course rigor. It would further advantageous if you could submit some 5s and 4s on the common app for your AP exams.

Good luck.
