Do sports help at Carnegie Mellon?
Answered

Hi

So I was just wondering if sports would help at getting into Carnegie Mellon. I run track and cross country and can run a 4:42 mile and a 17:20 5K, which both times would put me as one of their top runners there. I have a 4.0 uw gpa,1480 sat and I'm from PA, but I'm not positive if sports would help me get in.

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Hi @TyM.22, yes sports help at CMU if you can get on to the roster for Track or XC.

After looking at CMU's current Mens T&F roster I wanted to share the following:

The range of 1 mile run times for 4 different athletes are are (4:19, 4:22. 4:27, 4:33)

The range of 5K run times for 10 different athletes (14:49, 14:08, 14:52, 15:48, 15:20, 14:52, 15:33, 15:14, 16:04, 15:24)

With a 4:42 mile time and 17:20 5K time, you would be a recruited D1 or D3 athlete as a female runner, but not a male runner. At my HS this year, 2 sisters a 10th/11th grader girls ran a 4:49 and 4:50 mile times and 9:51 2 mile. So they are probably going to get recruited by U of Oregon or NAU, or NC State.

I don't think your running PRs will help you much at a CMU. Perhaps if you ran track at a smaller liberal arts college that would give you a way in.

Good luck.

I'd hesitate to reply because I don't know much about running or Carnegie Mellon specifically, but you said "any help is appreciated" ... so here's my two cents. I imagine that if your times would make you one of their top runners, it would definitely help. At any rate, it certainly won't hurt!
