Hello, i am a girl and I was wondering if that would aid in my addmission to engineering schools. Right now more women are going to college than men so there isn't a lot of affirmative action for females, but considering that engineering is a male dominated field, is it likley that being female will aid in my admission to engineering schools? Thanks!
Hi @Slyvester,
Thanks for your question, I think it is a great question.
The answer is that most private Technical colleges will admit a higher percentage of women as compared to men into engineering. But that is not the case with great research universities that are Ivys, Elites like Stanford, JHU, Rice, or large public universities.
So if you want to major in engineering as a woman and want to get the most affirmative action bump possible then apply to these colleges.
MIT - The admit rate for women is 6.0% or 2x what it is for men 3.0%
Caltech - The admit rate for women is 6.3% or 2.5x what it is for men 2.8%
Olin College of Engineering - The admit rate for women is 40% or 3.6x the admit rate for men at 11%
Georgia Tech - 24.6% for women or 1.6X what it is for men at 15.2%
Harvey Mudd College - 16.1% for women or 2.3X what it is for men at 6.9%
These colleges offer a slight bump but not much:
WPI - 67.4% women, to 55.7% for men
Purdue - 77% women to 63% men
You will not get a bump at Rice, RPI, any Ivys, Stanford, Duke, UChicago, etc.
I hope this is helpful. If you want to know the differential stats on any other college research their common data set and look for the stats under Section C1. First-Time First-Year Freshman Admissions.
Good luck.
