Extracurriculars
Answered

I'm a rising sophomore that live in NYC. I heard that it is best to start early but I do not know where to start in terms of extracurriculars or what activities I am passionate about that will help me stand out to colleges. I know I want to be a Finance and Accounting major. But, I am struggling to find extracurricular activities that pertain with my preferred major. Do you have any advice for me?

While most say that the obvious answer is to look into math related extracurriculars, I would advise that you try as many different extracurriculars you can to explore areas you haven't been exposed to yet. When I was a rising sophomore I barely new economics existed until I was practically forced to take the class my junior year. After a great year of the class (IB DP1 HL ECON) my teacher recommended that I look into obtaining a graduate degree in the field. I highly recommend you keep your options open and refrain from developing any kind of tunnel vision for your future, best of luck.

CollegeVine has got a great list of potential ECs for future business majors that I encourage you to check out (https://blog.collegevine.com/extracurriculars-for-high-schoolers-interested-in-studying-business/). However, not all your activities need to align with what you intend to study. Colleges are looking for dedication, growth and achievement in whatever activities you chose to do, business-related or otherwise. Choose things you are passionate about and enjoy doing!

I'd say look for anything math related (like math league). Also, becoming the treasurer of any club would probably look great. You can also join other clubs that don't have anything to do with math, but that you enjoy. Doing things in different categories shows that you have many interests, passions, and skills.
