I have a before-school class and an after-school class. They are Orchestra and Drama respectively. I spend time weekly practicing violin for Orchestra and I'm assistant concertmaster (2nd chair 1st violin) in the top orchestra in my high school. Drama is around 3-4 hours per day, at least twice a week, even every day when showtime is near. I do get a grade for these classes and they appear on my transcript, but I feel like that wouldn't fully express the amount of time and commitment that these activities involve.
Should I include these activities in the "Extracurriculars" section? I've gotten mixed answers from peers.
Hi @Breadler!
Yes, you can count this as an extracurricular just as you would sports. It's common practice, and it's appropriate since you're doing most of the work outside of class. Achievement in these subjects is also better reflected in the extracurriculars section than on your transcript (e.g. hours per week and rank vs a letter grade), and you'll probably have a lot of competitions and performances that would otherwise need their own extracurricular slot.
Hope that helps! Let me know if you have any other questions.
You should include them in extracurriculars because these activities are not academic, even if you get grades for them.
If you put in time after and before school or are there on the weekends, then I would count it.
