Extracurriculars and college question
Answered

Hello,

I am currently a high school junior and I have been a part of a group called Students Demand Action for a little while now. It is an amazing extracurricular and I love the community I have found in it, but recently they are looking for applicants for their National Advisory Board. I am thinking of applying, but the rest of my extracurriculars are STEM based. Will applying and potentially doing this activity hurt my options for college? I am hoping to major in Comp-Sci or something similar.

Hey there! I don't think it'll hurt your options for college- I think it COULD have the effect where it may improve your college chances (from what I hear, and note the emphasis on COULD), since it demonstrates that you have interest outside of your main interests. It's also something you can put on there for leadership anyways, and Students Demand Action has an amazing goal and purpose, so I would go for it!

Doing this activity will improve your admissions chances. Colleges want applicants to demonstrate a spike and be well rounded at the same time, so adding a few non-STEM ECs to your list will make you a better Computer Science applicant. Hope this helps!
