Hello! My name is Evan, and on Saturday (12/10/2022) I won second place in an international chess competition on Chess.com that consisted of over 2,000 people (all age groups). In addition to this, in this tournament, I beat someone (an adult) who was ranked top 75 in Vietnam.
I'm currently a Sophomore (15 years of age) and I'm wondering, when the time comes around, how I would add the 2,000 people sentence and the Vietnam sentence into my extracurricular activity description.
In my college apps, since I am going to probably apply as a pre-law major, I have a huge spike in humanitarianism (feeding thousands of people in my home (3rd world) country, etc) and I want the general theme of my application to be how I am continuously disproving the status quo of society, in this case, being one of the only gay high rated teen chess players in the world.
Thank you so much for the help!
Best Regards
Evan
Hi @Phycoticcc!
I know you want to put the "top 75" sentence to show that you weren't playing in a tournament with novices, but rather than saying that you beat a player who was ranked top 75 in Vietnam, try to give more context by using Glicko ratings that are given by Chess.com.
This is just an example:
"Ranked 2/2000 in an international competition on chess.com; also defeated a -rated player"
Hope this helps!
Thanks so much for this information. I have to let you know I concur on several of the points you make here and others may require some further review, but I can see your viewpoint quordle

Interesting! The guy was around 2200 rated on Chess.com, but I'm not quite sure if my admission officer would understand how high a rating that is...
