Yale Essay Prompt#1
Answered

Hi, I need help with writing an essay for prompt # 1 which says to "Reflect on a time when you exchanged ideas about an important issue with someone holding an opposing view. How did the experience lead you either to change your opinion or to sharpen your reasons for holding onto it?" I am having some trouble coming up with an answer to this because I have not had a time where I exchanged my ideas with someone else on an important issue.

It does not need to be about a very important issue. I had a similar prompt for another college and talked about how my dad didn't want me to join an NGO to focus on maintaining good grades and how I ended up joining because of how much I wanted to help. The type of colleges who ask you these questions tend to be very selective and want to know how you would interact or respond in the classroom to people who differ with you and your opinion on a topic. My advice is to write about anything related to you encountering someone who has different beliefs. For instance, when your math teacher gave you an assignment without explaining anything and you convinced him to be more open and help you with the project. Overall, it does not to be important, just something unique to you.

This CollegeVine blog post has some tips on how you can respond to this prompt. You can write about any moment - even a debate about ice cream flavors could make for a great essay. The important thing is to demonstrate open mindedness and write about a story that is unique to you. Hope this helps!
