Hello. I am applying to many of the top business schools in the US. I currently have letters of recommendation written by three teachers: my computer science teacher, who has taught me all four years, my business teacher, and my physics teacher.
Upon checking the admissions requirements for some of the schools on my list, some require recommendations from two core teachers (Math, English, Social Studies, Science, or Foreign Language). Unfortunately, many of my core teachers from last year left and cannot write letters of recommendation. However, I read online that Computer Science is considered a foreign language. Is this the case? If it is not considered a foreign language and I submit my physics and computer science letters, will I be automatically rejected from schools that require two core teacher recommendations?
Hey! it really depends on your school as well as the colleges you are applying to. at my school, cs counts as a foreign language credit, so if I ask a cs teacher to write a letter it would count as "from a foreign lang teacher". but I do know some colleges are lenient on that, for example, they might say as long as its a core class, and cs sometimes is considered math or science, so it could count as from a core teacher. just really go into the website for the school ur applying to and read what they say for the requirements. i also don't think you would automatically get rejected, but again it really depends on the schools youre applying to. if they made it clear they want both from core teachers, then they want both from core teachers. it may help to email the admissions office and tell them that ur core teachers arent able to write letters as well as ask if cs counts as a core teacher TO THEM. overall its really what they believe and their policy.
I don't think computer science is a foreign language. Foreign languages are like French and Spanish. Just ask the colleges and see if they consider it as one. Maybe explain your situation about the teachers leaving .
When asking whether or not something is a foreign language, ask yourself, what country speaks this? If you can't think of one, then it more than likely is not a foreign language.
Hey, I don't think computer science would count as a foreign language, but it could count as a science. If you're still not really sure, I would suggest calling the school and directly asking them. It's better to be safe than sorry! Good luck on your applications!
