Is getting an A in a honors course which is like basic level at my school or getting a B in an Ap class better
Hi @Swayam_Jain17!
Generally, an A on an honors course will give you a 4.5 weighted GPA whereas an A in an AP class will give you a 5.0 weighted GPA. In case of a B in an AP course, your weighted GPA will be 4.0. In terms of GPA, the A in honors is better.
However, if honors classes are considered base-level classes at your school, (meaning that they're the lowest rigor courses your school provides) you might be at a disadvantage compared to other applicants from your school who opt to take more AP classes.
Hope this helps!
If you can handle and excel at AP Courses, then it is always better to choose the more challenging coursework. Getting in a B in say something quite difficult like AP Chemistry, AP Physics or AP Calc B/C always looks better than getting the A and not challenging yourself even though your UWGPA might be higher. But if you took 3 hard APs, that would certainly count for more in terms of course rigor which is important for very competitive colleges. If you plan on going to a T100 or State College, then I think the higher GPA and honors classes would be perfectly acceptable. It just depends on your list of colleges and what you are trying to get into.
