I'm a junior and getting increasingly more anxious about the college application process. So I want to work as an OB/GYN in the future. I'm aware that I'll have to go through the premed track. The thing is, I don't want to major in a common science like biology, chemistry, physics, biochemistry, or psychology. My concern is that if I do not end up going to medical school, my science major will be rendered useless because finding a job will be difficult. I'm looking for a major that will help me not only with my premed track in college, but also if I don't end up going to medical school.
Please let me know if you know of any majors that you think would be suitable. Please make suggestions. Also, I've considered nursing (do you think it's a good idea?).
I recommend majoring in a field related to politics or one relating to business. With either direction, you will learn skills that will help you get a job outside of medicine while also preparing you to work in any medical office. A business degree would give you skills that would help you start your own practice and lead medical teams, while a political field of study would help you work in the health insurance and healthcare policy side of gynecology. Many other majors can intersect with gynecology too, such as sociology and communication.
Nursing is a great career track that is greatly needed due to continuing nurse shortages. Studying nursing at a college will put you on the fast track to leadership positions, though you can be very successful after completing an Associate's in Nursing at a community college instead.
Hope this helps!
