Admissions Advice

Should a take all 9 AP classes I plan to take?
Answered

I know that the college I want to attend, Johns Hopkins University, is a very prestigious college and you really need to impress the admissions step. Also what extracurriculars should I take to seem impressive? I am currently doing Marching Band and the Schools Newspaper and plan to do Speech and Debate and Student Council next year. I also did an extracurricular this summer before my freshman year. Can I add that to my application?

An extracurricular counts as anything you do outside of school. Even hobbies can count as ec's. Include everything you can, even if it was before high school, as long as it adds to what you have spent time doing. Johns Hopkins is amazing, but you defintely need a competitive application. EC's are super important, and as long as you don't overwork yourself/burnout quickly with lots of AP's, take what you want. But remember to focus on maintaining good grades on top of these hard classes. Lastly, include classes and ec's that relate to what you want to go into at JHU. For example, if you want to go into pre-med, take science AP's, any med related electives offered, aim for leadership positions in med-related clubs, volunteer/work at hospitals, etc. Hope this helped!

So long as you can manage the workload, taking 9 AP classes is a good idea; accepted applicants to Top 20 schools generally take at least 8 APs.

As for extracurriculars, you should definitely keep the ones you have. You should then add a few Tier 1 and Tier 2 activities to your list, along with a few that relate to your spike.

Hope this helps!
