What should i do?
Answered

I want to take Honors and AP classes because I want to get into Harvard and I feel like I can do it because I have a 4.0 GPA in my regular classes, but my counselor says they don't recommend it.

You have a great question!

It depends on what you want to major in, and if you think you can handle the advanced-level class load. You may consider asking your counselor why they don't recommend AP classes and what alternatives they do recommend. Some Honors and APs are harder than others, and it may be the specific class you want to take is difficult. I don't want to speculate for your counselor, but remember you are the only one who will have to take and live with your class decisions. Also, with AP classes, you must take the exam at the end of the course to get the credit(s). If you aren't a good test taker, you may consider Dual Enrollment/Credit options. Honors and AP classes are harder than on-level, so if you have the time and commitment to stick with it and put forth the effort, I would highly recommend taking advanced classes.

Hi @ophthalmology!

Did you ask your counselor why they said so? It's very unusual for that to happen, especially if you already have high grades in regular classes.

Hi!

I would ask your counselor why they don't recommend it? Is it because they think that you won't be able to maintain your 4.0 gpa and be disappointed? Honors and APs are challenging and can vary in that aspect depending on the course you take. Although you have a 4.0 gpa now, you may not be able to maintain it in honors or AP courses and maybe that's what your counselor is worried about? This is in no way to say you will do unsatisfactory in those classes---you may end up doing great! But just something you should be aware of! However, if you think you have what it takes, go for it! But remember not to take too many or you'll burn yourself out.
