Admissions Advice

Will not taking an elective affect my admissions
Answered

Next year, which will be my junior year, I'm looking to take all academic courses, my course list will look something like this hopefully,

- Algebra 2 honors

- Geometry honors

- Chemistry honors

- AP Environmental science

- AP Language

- AP European history

- French 2

This year they put me in Algebra 1B (I passed algebra 1 with an A so I do not know why I'm in this class), so I have to double up on Math next year, and since I'm taking APES the school also recommends I take Chemistry along with it, so I'm wondering since I'm not taking an elective will that reflect negatively on my college apps since I'm not exactly taking part in classes that I am interested in and I am just taking academic classes?

Colleges are more focused on your core courses than your electives. Your current course schedule is very rigorous and colleges will like it. However, do take some electives your senior year in the field that you intend to major in.

Given your circumstances, you will be fine with your current schedule. You are unable to take electives in part because your school required you to take certain classes. If any classes you are taking relate to your potential major in college, that would demonstrate a spike just like an elective would. Prioritize taking electives during your senior year, and you will be set. Hope this helps!

Hi!

This will probably depend on the colleges you plan on applying to. I would recommend looking at their websites or another requirement website in order to evaluate these choices, Typically, colleges will want to see around two-three years in each domain (Language Arts, Social Studies/History, Math, Fine Art, World Language, and Science) with a "spike" in the area of the major you're applying to. Some more prestigious colleges will want other things, but that's pretty much the general idea of the thing.

However, you should also take classes you're interested in. In high school, it's important to expand your horizons and explore alternate career paths. Your class resume is extremely impressive, but I encourage you to also have some fun. Best of luck!
