Are remote and unpaid internships legit?
Answered

I have seen so many opportunities for remote and unpaid internships for high school students. I would love an internship to book my college application and gain experience, but I feel like it is not that easy. I see so many Ivy students get accepted by having internships on their resumes, but I feel as if they are paid and in person, which is different from the ones I am finding online. Please let me know if I should take on these internships, and how much would they impact my application? Many of these are from either businesses or non-profits.

There are real remote and unpaid internship opportunities out there for high school students - in fact, these kinds of internships far outnumber the paid, in-person roles that accept high schoolers. College students and graduates are the only groups that are typically hired for paid internships, so it makes sense to see these "unicorn" opportunities on the resumes of Ivy-bound high schoolers.

Unpaid internships are also challenging for high school students to get, so doing one would be a significant boost to your EC list. An internship with a business or non-profit would demonstrate your maturity, ambition, intellectual curiosity, and spike. With the added benefit of being flexible and remote, an unpaid internship would be worth pursuing.

Hope this helps!
