I will be a senior next year, and I'm beginning to think about my major for college. I'm leaning towards international business or marketing as a major, not like finance or accounting where it's so math heavy.
Is it a good choice to go straight into business as an undergraduate since business needs a lot of experience, and merely learning concepts but not knowing how to apply them would not be really beneficial. Or should I do another major first, like psychology and then go back to get a business degree after my undergraduate years?
I don't really know about majors in college so any advice would be helpful! Thank you!
It all depends on what you want to do. A general undergraduate business degree will help you get at least an entry-level job in any area of business, but you are right that it is experience that really propels you in the business world. Majoring in something you are passionate about, e.g. psychology, and gaining a lot of work, research, or volunteering experience in it would make you more employable than having a business degree without much experience.
Getting an MBA after undergrad would help you in a different way than a Bachelor's in business. MBAs are designed to help people who are already working at the management level of a company reach the next levels of executive leadership. It is possible to get into an MBA program from any background - for example, it would make sense for the manager or owner-operator of a psychiatry practice to get an MBA to move into executive-level healthcare management at a larger establishment.
My advice is to major in what you enjoy most, and consider getting a minor or two as well. Try a lot of different fields in college, see what you like most, and then gain experience in that field before graduation.
Hope this helps!
