Any advice on how to improve ACT score?
Answered

Hey! I just got my ACT scores back and I’m a little disappointed. I got the exact same score as the time before even after doing some prep. Although I increased in my math and science, my English stayed the exact same and my reading decreased. Although I expected my reading to decrease, (I got a 35 the first time), my composite score isn’t the highest and I’m aiming for a 33 minimum. Does anyone have any tips or advice on how to increase my ACT score? Thanks!

Hi,

If you are aiming for a 33+ then you are aiming for a 98th to 99th percentile composite score. Only 1-2% of all 2 million ACT test takers can get to this score. For some, it's intuitive because they are geniuses but for most others, it takes multiple tries. For some getting a 33 will be the theoretical max for them and for others, they will be able to move up from a 33 to a 34 or to 35 or 36 with enough deliberate preparation.

So let's be clear about something, you might not get to a 33+ score ever. But if you want to try you have to prep differently than you have been because it's not working.

Here are my tips for attempting to get a 98th - 99th percentile score.

-Don't assume this information is readily available in some book, it isn't. You may have to invest some money in taking a college prep course like Kaplan, Princeton Review, or SuperTutorTV (Best ACT course)

-For the Love of ACT Science -Michael Cerro

-The College Panda's ACT Writing

-The College Panda's ACT English

-The College Panda's ACT Math

The College Panda's ACT Math Workbook.

-Download as many ACT practice tests as you can find or buy previous years' copies of the Official ACT Prep Guide from 2019-20, 2020-21, etc.

Good luck and don't beat yourself up about it.

(Also keep in mind for some people the SAT is a better test format so unless you are 100% convinced that your ACT concordance score is way better than the SAT, I would take an SAT practice test if you haven't done that already.)

Many students study for the ACT/SAT the wrong way—lots of practice tests are not the answer. First, within each section, questions are divided into content type. In the Reading section, you might get questions about Author's Intent or Making Inferences in the same way you might get Pre-Algebra or Triangle Geometry in Math. To get a higher score, you need to understand which of these content types you are commonly missing and intensely study those. You can expect a certain number of each question type on the test. It's not as effective to study the material you're nailing every test.

Second, you need to finish each section (if you aren't already). To get a 35 or a 36, this means you're missing 1-2 questions (with some variability by section, dependent on each test's curve). If you're guessing at the end (never leave a bubble blank), you're obviously more likely to get those wrong. That margin of error is the difference between getting a high score and a lower one. If you are finishing, every second you have left over should be for review. You should be certain that the questions you answered are correct.

Part of getting faster is practicing sections under timed conditions and part is knowing the structure and pattern of the test well. For example, the Math section gets progressively harder, so you should be spending less time on those early questions (and always getting them right—all questions are created equal, points wise).

Finally, some colleges will superscore the ACT, taking your best sections from each test date. It's worth seeing if the schools on your list will do so before taking your next test. Then you can narrow your study even further, to a section or two.
