Hello All.
I'm a Freshman at a high school in NY which is notorious for focusing more on it's sports programs than STEM, and as someone very much interested in biomedical sciences (hoping to become a Neurologist or Neurosurgeon) it's been bugging me that I haven't been able to find any books or things like that to help me so that I may participate in competitions or get ahead of my classmates in my biomed class next year.
I'm specifically looking for FREE resources.
There are many resources available for studying biology and biomedicine. Here are some of the best resources:
Textbooks: Textbooks are an excellent resource for learning biology and biomedicine. Some popular textbooks include Campbell Biology, Molecular Biology of the Cell, and Principles of Biology.
Online courses: There are many online courses available on platforms like Coursera, edX, and Khan Academy. These courses offer a structured way to learn biology and biomedicine and are often taught by experts in the field.
Scientific journals: Reading scientific journals is a great way to stay up to date on the latest research in biology and biomedicine. Some popular journals include Science, Nature, and Cell.
Podcasts: There are many podcasts available that cover topics in biology and biomedicine. Some popular podcasts include Radiolab, This Week in Virology, and Science Vs.
YouTube channels: There are many YouTube channels that offer educational content on biology and biomedicine. Some popular channels include Crash Course Biology, Kurzgesagt – In a Nutshell, and AsapSCIENCE.
Research papers: Reading research papers is a great way to gain a deeper understanding of a particular topic in biology or biomedicine. PubMed and Google Scholar are great resources for finding research papers.
Conferences: Attending conferences is a great way to learn about the latest research in biology and biomedicine, as well as network with other professionals in the field.
Biology/Biomedicine Departments at Universities: Contacting the Biology/Biomedicine Department at a local university and asking if they have resources that may be available to you is a great idea. Some universities have public lectures, seminars or workshops that may be of interest to the general public.
Remember that different resources may be better suited for different types of learners, so it's important to experiment with different resources to find what works best for you.
Hope this helps!
I had the same situation after my daughter finished my second year of college. Originally, she wanted to be a traditional doctor, then later on found out about Holistic Nutrition Health Degrees and changed her specialization, as she decided to become a Holistic nutritionist. So what I thought of, maybe you would want to check it too? This profession has good perspectives.
Thank you. This situation is quite frequently happening. My kids also feel uncertain about what they selected for their future profession.
Hi @Calstark!
If you want to gain more knowledge about biology or any other field in STEM, I strongly recommend using Khan Academy, Modern States, edX, and Coursera. These sites will have a lot of videos on topics taught in college biology. You can also find multiple resources on YouTube like Crash Course. If you want a textbook, OpenStax is pretty good.
Hope this helps!
