My son is a senior Brazilian student. In Brazilian school don’t have AP courses or Honors. The high school in Brazil have 16 mandatory courses same for all students . He is going to second Summer Program in June . Your GPA is 3.3 and don’t do a SAT . He want study Film . The faculties analyze curriculum according to the reality of each country?
The top Film universities in the US are very difficult to get into. For example USC, NYU, UCLA, Columbia etc. Even getting into Chapman, Cal Arts and Emerson is very hard these days. A 3.3 GPA is not going to impress anyone at these schools.
As an international student, you have stiff competition because there are many wealthy families around the world that want to send their kids to the US to get a top college education. These families have the money and resources to enroll their kids in private schools that offer both APs and the IB program as well as prepare them well for the SAT and ACT and other tests like TOEFL, IELTS. Plus they offer many extracurricular activities and community service opportunities like internships and volunteering.
Since your son has a lower GPA, he really should be submitting a high SAT or ACT test score to help his odds. Also, putting together an impressive video portfolio is important to show his potential as a future filmmaker.
If his dream is to attend a top American film school, I highly recommend that he take an extra year which we call a GAP year here in the US. During the GAP year, he can improve his grades by taking some college courses or online AP courses, test prep for the SAT or ACT, and working on his portfolio.
Maybe 25 years ago a 3.3 GPA would be good enough but these days the acceptance rates are very low. You really need a min. of 3.7 for an NYU, and 3.9 for the other schools just to be considered viable.
Yesterday NYU announced a 8% acceptance rate. USC was 9.8% and UCLA is going to be 8% something. Columbia is about 3.7%. Often film school is harder to get into than the arts and sciences so the real acceptance rates are most likely less than 5%.
Good luck.

Go to a community college like Santa Monica College or De Anza for further transfer to BFA in Film to ucla , usc or another top college would be a possible path for an international student?
