I am a 10th grader, and my school only offers 2 AP classes, no IB classes, and there are no honors classes in my school that I am aware of. I want to get into an Ivy League or prestigious college and feel worried about my current coursework. How can I boost my coursework?
Hi there! Even though your school has limited advanced coursework options, there are still a few alternatives you can do to increase your chances to get into an Ivy League or prestigious college.
1. Online Classes: One option you have is you can consider taking online classes to supplement your current coursework. Many online platforms offer courses in various subjects, including advanced and specialized courses. You can take a few courses over the summer or during your free time to demonstrate your interest and aptitude in certain subjects. Online classes are more flexible and convenient. However, you must have good time-management skills if you want to do well.
2. College Summer Courses: Another option includes taking summer courses at colleges. I know some colleges offer courses during the summer where you can receive credit and some colleges don't so if you are interested in summer courses at colleges, be sure to check whether you want credit or not and to check which colleges offer credit and which colleges don't.
3. Dual Enrollment During School Year: You could also do dual enrollment during the school year. There are online and in-person options. They may be conflicting with your school schedule or it could be after school. If it conflicts with your school schedule, it may mess up your lunch times and other classes and you'll have to deal with transportation from your school to the college and back. If it's after school, your classes could either be at night or sometime right after your school ends. It is usually 1 - 3 hours long but it's usually not every school day. On the positive side, it provides you with credits on your college transcript if you do well so usually it is "C" or better but that depends on the area you live in.
4. AP Exam Self-Study: Lastly, you could self-study for the AP Exam. If you want to self-study AP courses, that would be an impressive thing to do if you're up for the challenge since your school doesn't offer that many and it may look appealing to colleges. As for costs to take the AP Exam, it would depend on the class you are planning to take.
All of these choices include commitment and effort, but they can make you stand out as a competitive and well-rounded applicant in regards to coursework. I hope this helps!
not rly advice but to shed some light.
colleges will take into account what courses are/aren't offered at your school. if you take the "harder" or more rigorous classes that your school does offer, they'll see you as a hard worker regardless. but you can self study aps and do dual enrollment if you'd like.
Hey, my best advice for you is to get in touch with your high school counselor. I also suggest taking ap classes online. Also remember that this is only one factor that helps decide you can also shine with your extra activities.
