When should I ask for a letter of recommendation?

So, I have been considering asking my GED tutor for a letterof recommendation. But what I am wondering about is whether or not it is worth it and when I should do it.

If I were to get the letter, then I think that I should do it sooner than later, seeing as that I'll be moving out of the area I live in relatively quickly.

If you have just finished your junior year in high school, I would personally ask them right now if they are available. Otherwise, you should ask them at least 3-4 weeks in advance (before the deadlines to turn in your college applications for each college) to be able to give them some time to write them.
