Answered

hello!

im a high school rising junior in a small school. we dont have many ap courses or extracurriculars and i just started getting interested in where im going to college (ik its kinda late) and i cant do many after school activities bc of my schedule. im scared that i wont be able to get into upenn which is my top choice at the moment. im wondering if anyone has any suggestions that could make me stand out when i do start to apply for schools and things that can help me get into ivies!

Hi, I'm a rising junior too! I think I can help with your question.

-Take a good look at the clubs at your school, and think about the career you want to pursue. Join the clubs that may help you gain experience/learn information for the career you want

-Make your own club: This is can be even better than joining one. It shows that you are able to take on a leadership position, and shows your passion towards the club.

-Ask your teacher for more challenging work if you can't get into an honors class within that subject (and then tell them that's what you did)

-Think outside the box, or rather outside the town. There might be opportunities or groups you can join within/outside of town.

-look for prestigious summer programs online

-work on sharpening the skills needed for the career you want to pursue.

I hope this can help!

Hey there! I know this question has already been answered, but I wanted to add a few things to @victoria-0987's advice.

1. Try volunteering in your community. Aim for 50-200 volunteer hours with a cause that is important for you. Clothing and food banks, pet shelters, and summer camps are pretty common and accessible.

2. Try self-studying for an AP class by buying a textbook and registering to take the test. You could also try to do an independent study at your school, which would require you to pick a topic and a faculty advisor.

3. Try joining the National Honor Society if your school has a chapter.

4. Look into 'passion projects' for an area that you're interested in.

5. Join a sports team, start taking music lessons, persue theatre, or take up painting. Find a hobby that you can commit a lot of time to that will show dedication and commitment.
