Should I use retake the SAT or take the ACT?
Answered

I have taken the SAT and have received average/below average scores (1270 range). I really want/need a 1400+ to be a competitive applicant at certain schools. My English score was 700, but my math score just seems to stay within the 540-560 range. I have done test prep with a tutor and on Khan Academy and I don't see much improvement. I was wondering, to better my chances, should I take the ACT? I have not done any prep yet and I am planning on applying to certain schools Early Action, so I would have to take it pretty soon. (All my schools are test-optional, but applying with a high score would be great). I have heard some people say it is a bit better for those who get higher scores in English, but I have also heard that about the SAT. If anyone has any insight it would be very helpful!

Hi!

To answer your question, yes, take the ACT! You have nothing to lose by taking it. A lot of the concepts are very similar between both of the tests, so you could still do really well without much studying! Differences include a science section, faster pace on all the questions, and a calculator on all the math questions. If you do well on the test and are happy with your score, it could benefit you, and if it's not what you expected, at least you know that you tried it and did your absolute best! I believe if you want to apply EA, there are three tests left, July 15th (this weekend), September 9th, and October 28th.

If Khan Academy isn't working for you, I would recommend purchasing a prep book with multiple practice tests. With these practice tests, make sure to self document EVERY SINGLE mistake regardless of how small. You could do this in a notebook or online (google sheets). I found that working through my mistakes at my own pace with my own techniques was a lot more beneficial.

If you still do not get the score that you like, know that it's not a make or break situation. Like you said, a lot of schools are test optional now and that's for a reason. A good score just isn't much of a priority, so make sure that you have a well rounded application. This includes extracurriculars, leadership positions, volunteering, etc.

Good luck :))
