I am getting ready to write my Common app essay and I think I have an idea of what I would like to write about and I'd like some feedback on it.
I plan on applying to a few state universities and some colleges close to me (no crazy ivy league schools), it is my dream to attend the University of Maryland (I'm in-state) and get accepted into the business school. I've got a good GPA, good ECs, and a 1300 SAT and I plan on taking it again in Oct to hopefully get it closer to UMD's 25th percentile of 1380.
I plan on choosing the create your own prompt choice, though I haven't typed out a prompt yet. Baseball has been a big part of my life and everything I've been taught through it. My dad has coached me throughout my childhood and has always had life philosophies that relate to baseball. I want to focus my essay on his main philosophy of "Field, settle, throw" and explain the baseball meaning and how I have used and plan to continue using each step in several aspects of my life.
Do you like the idea of the essay topic? Does it show enough of me that my admissions profile does not? Is it too cliche?
Thank you so much for your help!
Kyle
Hi Kyle, I think you are on the right track with the essay idea. As long as you can bridge your baseball background/philosophy to other skills/experiences then it can work (and it sounds like this is your plan). Some sports themed essays can be overdone, but it’s usually more the type that are like “here’s what I had to overcome to go from losing to winning the championship”. If yours zeros in more on how your baseball philosophy has been applicable to academics and other life challenges then it should resonate. Good luck.
