University of Maryland
Answered

Hi

I checked the admitted students profile for University of Maryland, it says 4.3

Not sure if I am reading their stats correct. does it require that high GPA to get into this University.

Thanks.

It's actually higher at 4.39 but that is a weighted GPA. It's not based on an unweighted scale and since most admits come from Maryland, it would be fair to say that Maryland high schools have rampant grade inflation and their weighted scale is based on 5 points (for APs and Gifted and Talented courses)

I did look at the UMD common data set as well for the last reported cycle and it stated that 92% of the admitted class had an unweighted GPA of 4.0, 4% had a UWGPA between 3.76-3.99, and 2% had a UWGPA between 3.51-3.75.

Therefore I would conclude that UMD has very high GPA standards and while it does make exceptions, perhaps those admitted with lower GPAs are recruited athletes, children of faculty, and other hooked applicants.
