UT Austin is my dream school, but with how selective it is, I’m worried my rank (barely top quartile), course work (7 APs, 8 honors, 4 DC), and SAT scores (1220😭) aren’t good enough. I’m applying as a journalism major, and will be taking the ACT with hopes for a good score. Any tips for UT Austin admissions?😞 I’m looking for opportunities or activities that the admissions there really like to boost my chances.
If you are a Texas resident, you will know that UT Austin has an auto-admit provision for those who rank in the top 6% of their graduating class. This means that even for in-state applicants, UT Austin remains very competitive. I think the overall admit rate is around 30% but the in-state rate is 40% and the out-of-state rate is less than 8%.
So if you are out-of-state, it's just as hard to get into UT Austin as it is to get accepted to UCLA, UC Berkeley, UVA, UMich, and other top-state universities.
1220 is not bad but on the low side for UT Austin. I would retake the exam if I were you and shoot for 1300+ or a 28-29 on the ACT.
Good luck.

I am in Texas, but I’m not qualifying for auto admission. I’m scheduled for the ACT though so hopefully I do good! Thankssss. I was speaking to an admissions officer and they said their acceptance rate for people who don’t qualify automatically is around 10ish% for in state too which is crazyyy
