I don't like my housing assignment. Now what?

Ok, let's say I committed to a college after May 1 and declined all others. Now July/August comes and I get my housing assignment, and that didn't match my preferences.

Sure, I'm not legally obligated to go to that college, but since I've already declined all other offers, where else can I go?

Or should I have only applied to colleges that guarantee housing preferences in the first place?

Hmm... that's sounds like a tricky situation. Maybe keep one safety school you're 99.9% sure you'll get into on the side? Also, if you've already committed to a college, you must have chosen it for a reason. Is it something you're okay to live with while in college? Another thing I've heard is that you might be able to get housing preferences by becoming an RA, but not every college gives you the option. If you are set on or really like a certain college, I think you should still apply anyway.
