For the application season, I am planning to ED to UPenn. My 1st choice is the M&T program (60 ppl per yr), which is stupid selective. My second choice is the Wharton School of Business. I really want to be able to attend Wharton, but I want to give M&T a shot because it is a total dream of getting admitted. Will it hurt my chances of getting in Wharton if I M&T is my first choice?
If you apply ED to M&T, there are only 3 outcomes in mid-December. Either you are accepted, deferred, or rejected. If you are accepted, you are golden. If you are deferred, you will find out whether M&T wants you in their program at the end of March. If you are rejected, you can't reapply for another year.
I guess if you are deferred, you have multiple outcomes. 1. M&T accepts you. 2. Only Wharton accepts you. 3. Only UPenn Engineering accepts you. 4. Only A&S accepts you. or 5. You are rejected.
At some point, you have to do an honest assessment of your appeal to UPenn and determine if you are merely shooting your shot, or if your academic and EC narrative are in perfect alignment with the M&T cohorts that have been admitted historically. Try engaging with some M&T students and getting feedback.
