A Sophomore (!0th Grader) Looking for Some Advice
Answered

Hello!

I'm a sophomore (10th grader) in high school and was hoping you could give me some advice on what I can do this year to help me get into a good college.

Maybe some suggestions on what to do and what not to do this year?

I would really appreciate it!

Thank you for your time!!!

Hi! I'm a high school senior. First thing to do is get good grades. That is the main thing for college admissions honestly. Make sure you're taking a good course load that includes AP classes and such.

If you're in 10th grade, you'll want to consider taking the SAT/ ACT. So many schools are test optional these days, but personally I learned awesome study skills from the SAT so I definitely think it's worth it. If you don't get a good score you don't have to report it but if you do, it's always a point in your favor. Now is a good time to take the PSAT as well.

For extracurriculars, first think about what you might want to study in college one day, and think about what you enjoy best. Try to have a sports extracurricular, something in the arts, community service/ volunteering, leadership, etc. to show you are well rounded.

I think sophomore year isn't too early to start sort of thinking a bit about what you want in a college and what you would enjoy as a career. For example, do you want public or private, in state or out, any specific major? College counselors are great for this stuff.

In terms of what not to do, definitely don't stress and burn yourself out. It's great to start thinking ahead, but work on enjoying the present instead of worrying about the future.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Hello!

I am currently a senior in high school, and I was and still am just like you, curious and wanting to get ahead. My best advice would be to get involved with your school and join all the clubs you're interested in, even if they seem "weird." You never know what you might fall in love with and work up to leadership positions. It's important to get involved but remember to stay focused on what you're interested in and not to spread yourself too thin.

Also, it is so important to do the very best you can on your grades. Sophomore year is the perfect time to raise your GPA and set yourself up for success.

Good Luck!
