How do I fill out the honors section in the Common App?
Answered

I've been admitted into three honor societies (of different prestiges) and I want to include them in my app through the honors section. The organizations being the National Junior Honor Society, NSHSS, and Phi Theta Kappa. I got my NJHS membership in freshman year (my district is on the junior high system), my NSHSS membership in sophomore year, and my PTK membership in my junior year because I am in dual enrollment. I am for sure putting my PTK membership in the honors section, but unsure whether to put NJHS in activities or honors, as well as whether or not to outright include NSHSS in my app. But that's another topic.

I just wanted to ask how to classify these memberships according to their level of recognition. Would NJHS + NSHSS be a school level of recognition, and PTK a national level of recognition; etc?

Thanks for the help.

I was wondering about the honors section too and ended up reading a lot about it on Common App.

The impression I got is that you can check off each level of recognition that would apply. If PTK invited you through your school or has a chapter at your school, you could check off the school level, but you could also check off international because it's an international organization.

If you're part of an honors society that you also spend time doing activities for, I think you could put it in both categories? If you only have room for it in one category, though, I'd recommend adding it to activities if you want to give a more-depth explanation of your work through the organization.
