Can I talk about something instead of someone on common app essay question #4
Answered

The question is: Reflect on something that someone has done for you that has made you happy or thankful in a surprising way. How has this gratitude affected or motivated you?

I was wondering if I could write about something I an thankful for, like an object, instead of a person?

I believe that would deviate from the prompt. This one in particular is more about 'someone' than 'something' - most importantly its about your reflection on that experience.

If you want to talk about an object I'd say select the last common-app essay prompt. It allows you to talk about "ANYTHING" and hence you could make it about, well, anything!
