Hi! There are two terms you'll need to get familiarised with: need-based financial aid and merit-based scholarships. Financial aid is usually based on your financial need and Expected Family Contribution, determined using the FAFSA or CSS Profile. Merit scholarships are awarded based on community involvement, academic merit (standardised scores, GPAs, awards, etc) and a lot of other facets.

Whether or not a school offers need aid, merit scholarships, or both, and whether or not you qualify for any can usually be checked by going to the school's financial aid website or contacting their Office of Financial Aid.
