Hello! I am an online school junior. I was just wondering if there were any other online school students who got into their first choice/a top-tier school, and what they might have done differently than a traditional, brick-and-mortar student. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated!
Online Junior here as well, hello!! I haven't applied for college yet of course, but as a fellow virtual student I'd love to hear comments from those who have and were accepted.
Some advice I have is that for students at my school at least, its extremely difficult to find or participate in school extracurriculars. The one I attend doesn't advertise ANY clubs at all. However, it actually has 2 honors societies that nobody really talks or knows about. I'd recommend emailing/messaging your guidance counselor or teacher to find out if there are any clubs or ec's that you might have not heard of. If not, see if you could create something.
Another piece of advice, take advantage of the flexibility you may have! I have the option to work ahead, and I also don't have to be in school for a set time each day. I'm able to participate in activities during times other high school students couldn't, and complete my work before or after.
In general, compared to brick-and-mortar students I find that you really have to show initiative and 'put yourself out there'. Its great for brick and mortar students to do this as well, but it takes more effort online. If you have an interest you are wanting to pursue in college, you should actively seek out things outside of school that can help build on it, if the opportunities your school provides don't suffice. If you can communicate with small businesses, nonprofits, people you know who work in an industry you plan to study, see if you can volunteer, intern, job shadow, participate in a program, etc. And if you make connections with those people, try to consistently build on those connections with them as well.
I wish you the best of luck!! :D

I totally get it!! My school doesn't have clubs, either!! I had to start my own for home/online schoolers- it's an art magazine called To the Point if you're interested! Also, I couldn't agree more that it's SO much harder to show initiative online. I wish you the best of luck, as well!! :))
