Is writing about growing up in a diverse city too cliche?Answered
For schools like Brown, Columbia, Duke, and Northwestern that ask for short responses about lived experience/how my unique experience will contribute to diversity at their school, I've written an essay about growing up in a multicultural city (Washington DC) and how that taught me to be inclusive and accepting and I will bring these values to a college campus. Is this too bland/unoriginal? I am looking at very competitive universities and don't know if I should try and write about something more outside-the-box.

This is a fairly unique topic BUT you can make it more original: After stating "growing up in a multicultural city (Washington DC) and how that taught me to be inclusive and accepting" then GIVE SEVERAL EXAMPLES. Share a few unique instances that stood out to you and shaped your views. No 2 people in DC will have the same experiences! Then you can explain how it shaped you AND how you will bring the values to the college campus after kind of showing the experiences and "practice" so to speak, that you have had.

It really depends on what type of "wow factor" you want in your essay.
Growing up in a multicultural city is not very different from the general population because America is a mixing pot.
My essay recounted an insensitive comment about me and kept it light-hearted. It shows growth, and the ability to let go of anger.
If you believe you are capable of writing an engaging essay about your experience, go for it because I can see a really pretty essay about it. You could talk about the negatives, and how the school will allow for more opportunity.
