Admissions Advice

Dream school
Answered

I have wanted to go to UNC since I was born! My dad and all my relatives went there, and so I would feel very proud to get in. However, I have a 3.6 unweighted gpa (which I understand is low) and my class rank is only slightly above average. My school is very competitive but I just feel like my chances, especially because I am out of state, are incredibly low and that I should prepare for the worst. I did a research internship this summer where I studied cancer and am on a council for my states Department of Health, but I am worried my extracurricular involvement is not enough to make it in. To add- I am involved in my school and community as well! I volunteer weekly and am the leader of a club at my school, as well as involved in other clubs. If anyone can offer advice on my chances and the way UNC reviews applicants, I would greatly appreciate it!

I live in NC, I know a lot of people who have gotten into UNC. One thing they all said is that your essays matter greatly. So if you can keep your grades up, and maybe add some extracurriculars or continue with your internship(consistency is key), if you have a stellar essay your chances will be higher. I hope you get in!!

Another crucial piece will be your essay. What grade are you in? I recommend juniors to begin brainstorming ideas b/c it's great to test several. I wrote an extensive post about essays you may find helpful: collegevine.com/c/junior/49537/make-your-essay-stand-out

If you have any questions, lmk!

Personally what I would do is put any sports you've played (even recreationally because it helps) and you volunteer work under your extracurriculars. Keep in mind that your extracurriculars are literally just any activities you do outside of school; that means any clubs, sports, whatever you can put will help. Now as for your GPA, a 3.6 unweighted isn't terrible, but if its not to late talk to your school counselor about trying to get in any/more honors and ap classes. Hope this helps.
