Hi there! I'm currently a high school freshman, and I've been making a list of extracurriculars I plan to do next year and in the future. My dream job is to be a costume designer/fashion or art historian, and I plan to apply to places like Yale, Carnegie Mellon, Suny Purchase, Bryn Mawr, FIT, NYU, Swarthmore, Stephens College, and such.
Here's my list:
- Costuming for my school's plays and Musicals
- Orchestra
- Choir
- Color Guard
- Fashion Club
- Young Feminist Club
Contests I plan to enter:
- State award for costume design (I got 2nd place this year, and plan to enter in the years to come)
- National French Contest
-Possibly some further writing or art contests
Over the summer:
- Working at a Quilting store and teaching children's sewing classes
- Art and/or Creative writing classes at our local community college
- Pre-college programs at FIT
Future endeavors:
- Starting an Etsy store for sewing patterns
- Writing and directing a short play at school
For the record, I have all As and take (and plan on taking) all available honors and AP courses.
Looks like a great plan!
Couple pointers: Pre-college programs can be expensive (especially the 1-week ones), so depending on your situation, investing in community college classes may be better!
As far as ECs, tip #1 is ALWAYS quality over quantity- cannot stress that enough. Frazzling yourself by cramming in this here and this there is not good. Choosing a few ECs you are passionate about and sticking to them shows commitment, passion, and demonstrated interest. This appeals to admission officers! Also, leadership roles are important. If you stay commited to specific clubs, consider applying for leadership positions. Another great option is to start your own club! Do what you love and then it won't feel like filling a resume- my ECs are all things that invigorate and interest me. Remember, you do want to enjoy high school :) All work and no play is not good for you despite whatever people say.
Keep up the good work and lmk if you have any questions :)
yes this amazing on how you are pan to be involved, just make sure you have time for yourself once in a while because balancing school, relationships, and extracurriculars can get hard at times! But you are an inspiration! Keep up the good work!
