I'm interested in writing and I think it will be one of my main extracurriculars in high school. I was having trouble choosing between entering writing competitions or starting my own blog as a writing activity. I think I can be successful in both activities, but I'm unable to do both because of my busy schedule
This relates to a more general question I have which is winning competitions vs. starting your own initiatives. When you do these activities at the highest level/tier possible, which one is considered more impressive to colleges? I'm guessing you should aim to do both types of activities, but I was wondering if you could still have an impressive application with just initiatives.
I think both would be great for your college admissions at a high level. You should think about which of these you would like the most/have more passion. If you want to write a blog about something you are really passionate on it may be a great motivator to improve it. But if the competitions are what are going to motivate you, you should do that.
My opinion is, of course, you can impress the admissions committee by launching your initiatives. It's important to demonstrate your independence, creativity, leadership qualities, and ability to take initiative. These traits can be very impressive to colleges, especially if you successfully implement your ideas and achieve positive results. Thus, launching your initiatives can be a key component of your efforts to create an impressive college application. However, I am not a member of the admissions committee, and I cannot guarantee anything. This is just my opinion, so please don't judge.

sorry, but in my opinion, your opinion is not exhaustive.
