Hi, I am currently a sophomore in high school. I'm really interested in becoming a neurosurgeon, and have been contemplating whether I should get my undergraduate in neurology or biochemistry, then apply to medical school. Any recommendations when it comes to that will be amazing to have.
My stats are:
3.57 (UW) > This will probably drop after this year.
3.84 (W)
1310 PSAT
Will be taking SAT and ACT during junior year.
6 Honors > Geometry, Precalc, Calc, Chem, Bio, Physics
5 APs > USH, Psych, Stat, Calc AB, Calc BC.
My extracurriculars are:
Waksman Student Scholars Program from Rutgers University:
- Research published in NCBI
- Application needed
- Also a part of the Waksman Institute Summer Experience
Girl Scouts:
- Finished my Silver Award and received The President’s Volunteer Service Award > Educating youth in India and the US in topics in science > 120.32 hours
- Currently finishing Gold Award
Future Problem Solvers:
- Part of Future Problem Solvers Program International
- Got to state level
Hospital Volunteering:
- Went to two hospitals for volunteering
- More than 75 hours
Library Volunteering:
- Middle School
- More than 40 hours
Music Volunteering:
- Played music for hospice patients
- More than 30 hours
Viola:
- In the Philharmonic (highest level of orchestra in my school)
- Audition needed
Violin:
- Have been playing since I was 7.
I have to self study AP Chem and AP Bio, since I didn't meet the requirements in my school. Bad idea, I know. 🤡
Anyways, I need help boosting my stats. I know I will definitely ruin my GPA by the end of this year, so I'm not counting on that to appeal to any colleges I apply to. I'm planning to boost my extracurriculars to make up for my grades.
So in case you know of any internships, jobs, or opportunities that would help, that'd be great! Thanks!
Hello! These stats aren't too bad, actually. Taking honors precalc, calc, geometry and AP Calc AB and BC in your Sophomore year is quite impressive. A good internship to find would be to shadow a doctor/surgeon at a local hospital. Stanford has a good, prestigious, one here worth trying for: simr.stanford.edu/. Another great thing to do would be to do a research project on something related to neurosurgery (idk what since I don't know anything about that). If you think you can handle it, taking advanced health classes at your local CC would look good as well. I'm sure there are plenty of opportunities waiting for you. Good luck!
