So, I'm going to be a sophomore next semester and I'm trying to make sure I build a great portfolio over the next few years. That way I don't cram everything into my Junior and Senior years. So what kinds of activities should I be doing to create a out of the ordinary portfolio? I'm currently trying to start a business and next semester I'm going to join my school's debate club but are there any outside of school extracurriculars you guys would recommend? Because I'm technically homeschooled but I attend my local public high-school for one class period and participate in a extracurricular...so I can't do a lot of the at-school activities like some of my friends. I still have a pretty good GPA at my high-school (4.0 I think) but I feel like I really need to make my list of achievements and involvement a lot longer, if you get what I'm saying.
Hey there! I am a homeschooled student :) One of the BEST things about being homeschooled is that you have the freedom to pursue your passion right now. This has opened so many doors for me during high school, including professional floral design classes/certificates, independent horticulture studies, and moving towards opening a business. Don't worry about a list to showcase. Sounds simple to say, but do what you love. The rest will fall into place. If you are truly passionate about something, you will hunt down creative ways to get involved and go places with that passion. For me, one thing led to another, and it was amazing to see what opportunities popped up! Remember, QUALITY over quantity when thinking about EC's.
Hope this is helpful and encouraging. Please lmk if you have any questions :)
From the academic perspective, you should take courses on Khan Academy, Coursera, or edX. You could also consider participating in competitions, such as, Math, Science, Coding, or Writing. Another thing to do is take part in extracurriculars, such as, Debate Club, Engineering Club, and Scholastic Scrimmage Club. It is also beneficial to do some volunteering (community work), because it shows leadership. Since, you are starting a business, it may be helpful, to make a plan, and prepare about how you want to do this. Another thing that is also helpful, is to make your own personal website, and list your achievements, and projects you have participated in throughout High School. When applying to college, it is important to have a good GPA, and a few extracurriculars that you are passionate about.
To keep this community safe and supportive:
when you say take courses on Khan Academy, can I actually count those as full on courses and add it to my resume? And then with Coursera if I take a course and don't get a certificate can I still say I've taken the course???
