A little context -
- During 8th grade, I wanted to be a pilot. Now, I'm a freshman in high school taking an aviation elective. the class material was very boring for me
- I wanted to be so many things growing up, a doctor, director, actor, writer. I could never decide.
- However, I've always wanted to work independently, be my own boss, that's when I decided to be a business owner/entrepreneur/CEO.
- but I see lots of competitive college applicants know their desired career since they were in, like first grade, and that discouraged me a lot throughout my life (everyone had clarity except me, basically i'm worried because they have always had an established "spike" and I don't)
- anyways, I feel like being a business owner is THE ONE (most career tests also say my personality is perfect for a CEO)
- thinking of taking entrepreneurship/accounting electives from now on
My main question is: will colleges look down upon me because I entered high school wanting to be a pilot, but ending up wanting to be a business owner? Will they think I can't commit to anything?
Sincerely apologize for this sounding like a sob story + super wordy. Plz understand
@aspiringCEO_22, it is okay! I understand, and this is good, since it helps me understand your situation better!
When in college, you can do a Dual-Degree, as I am planning to do! You can be anything you want AND become a business CEO! As a matter of fact, I have the same aspirations as you do, so you're not the only one here! :D
First, you MUST find what you want to be! You are in 9th grade now, and (as you may already know) the classes you take in your High School years are important for gaining knowledge in whatever field you want! You must find a profession you love the most out of all of them, and don't make the same mistake I made, always changing what I wanted to become! Now I have less time to learn more about the field I want to learn more about(basically wasting my first two(2) years of high school with knowledge that would not help me with my goals). Time is the most valuable thing!
Second, whatever profession you choose, you must have a balance of classes between both your chosen profession and becoming a business CEO! For example, if you choose being a pilot and a business owner, I would recommend choosing JROTC(if your school does not have a JROTC program, then choose Physics and Math classes such as Geometry and Trigonometry(You're a freshman right now, so you can't take these math classes YET, but you must pass Algebra I FIRST!)) And for being a business CEO, take the class that I am currently taking as a Junior in high school: Marketing. Other classes that can help you with becoming a business owner is Statistics, Social Media Marketing, Business Math, and Business I(Note: Business I and Business Math might not earn you credit for college varying on the high school you attend, but will look impressive!). You only have four(4) years of high school, so choose these classes WISELY! You don't need to choose as many classes as you can, just talk to your school counselor about taking these certain classes and if it can help with earning enough credits for graduating high school and if each one can help with applying for colleges. All of these classes mentioned will show leadership and a desire to be a leader and not a follower, which will look good for colleges!
In conclusion, it all depends on you! Colleges will not look down upon you; you are only overthinking! A Dual-Degree is perfect for this situation, and can you achieve success in BOTH whatever profession you choose AND becoming a business CEO! People have achieved that before, so it is possible!
I understand that you may be overwhelmed by all the information that I have given to you; I would be as well. But don't worry, you're only starting high school! Take things step by step and take a breather when you feel the need for it. I wish you the best of luck, and I know that one day you WILL achieve greatness! You can talk to me whenever you have questions, I'll be more than happy to help! After all, we have similar aspirations! I'm happy that I'm not the only one!
It’s completely normal for interests and career goals to evolve over time, especially during high school when you’re exposed to new subjects and experiences. Colleges understand this and generally do not look down on students for changing their career aspirations. In fact, they often appreciate students who explore different fields and find their true passion. So, no colleges won't look down on you as long you have the passion for the career and skills you need for your selected career.
