Take SAT/ACT or not to take SAT/ACT?

While I have a high GPA, I’m not the best standardized test-taker. Should I forgo the stress and effort of studying for the SAT and apply test-optional? If I study and take the test but still don’t score high enough—which is likely—I would likely choose the test-optional route anyway. It seems to me that the stress and time spent preparing may not be worthwhile in my case.

I think it depends a lot on where you are trying to go. A lot of the top schools, besides the UCs and some other exceptions, do want some sort of test score, even if it is not the greatest. You have to do your research on the testing policies for the schools that you want to apply for. Some schools might still make testing scores important, others might just want a score just to say you had one, and others might just allow you to apply test-optional. I think that it is important for you to remember that test-optional is different than test-blind. Test-optional does allow you not to report a score but it might lean more towards those who do. I definitely think that you should just put all your effort into taking it at least once and if it doesn't go well, just apply test-optional. A lot of schools are still pretty open on the whole testing policy so just make sure to look into the specifics!

I would suggest simply studying and taking the test and see how you do. Just so you don't regret it later and so you're eligible for some scholarships. Most top schools are also requiring test scores now, so it really depends on where you apply. Smaller schools and some state schools often offer huge merit scholarships if you do well, so just try your best!

Where are you trying to apply to? That makes a big difference. If you are aiming for the top schools, taking one of them is a nessecity. You are very unlikely to get into a top 25 or so school without an sat or act score. Even if not applying to top schools, there is still a lot of merit in taking one. You don't have to study to take the test, you can always just take it and do your best. Even if you get a lower score, for a lot of schools it might not be that low. It confirms your high GPA and your intellect. You don't need to stress over studying for it either, it isn't that terrifying. Simply spend 10 minutes a day going over problems and practicing and you might see a very good score. Not just the prospects of getting a high score, but being more prepared for this standardized test might help you get more used to other standardized tests. I really implore you to take one.
