You're doing exactly what top colleges want to see—thinking critically about your interests and making thoughtful choices. Chorus is definitely not useless, and being part of a mastery-level ensemble can be very appealing to colleges, especially if you show commitment and growth over time. Colleges value students who pursue their passions deeply, and your progression into the top ensemble shows dedication and talent. Chorus also demonstrates collaboration, creativity, and discipline—traits that are highly respected in competitive admissions. If you take on leadership roles, like section leader or soloist, or help organize performances, that adds even more value. While some people might say band is better, what matters most is that you genuinely enjoy chorus and are willing to invest in it. Admissions officers can tell when a student is passionate versus when they’re just checking boxes. So if chorus is where your heart is, stick with it and make the most of it. That authenticity will shine through in your application—and that’s what truly impresses colleges.
