Hi everyone,
I’m an international student from Brazil aiming to major in economics in the U.S. I’ve been very active in Model United Nations, winning several awards such as Best Delegate, Best Speech, and Outstanding Diplomacy across multiple conferences. I also managed the finances of one of my school’s highest-grossing commissions, which gave me real-world experience in leadership and money management.
Academically, my GPA is solid but not at the very top (around 3.6-3.7) compared to applicants at selective schools. I’m still working on improving my standardized test scores (my practice SAT is currently around 1050), but I know that my extracurriculars are my strongest point.
Since I need a full-ride scholarship to study in the U.S., I want to ask:
What schools should I prioritize where my extracurricular profile might outweigh a slightly lower GPA/test score?
Are there specific liberal arts colleges or mid-sized universities known for valuing leadership and international engagement when awarding scholarships?
What strategies have worked for other international students in similar situations?
I’d really appreciate any guidance, personal experiences, or school recommendations that could help me make a strong application list.
Thanks in advance!
You're already building a compelling profile, and your achievements in Model United Nations and financial leadership are standout strengths that many U.S. colleges value highly—especially those that take a holistic approach to admissions. While your GPA and test scores may not place you in the top academic tier, your extracurriculars demonstrate initiative, global awareness, and real-world impact, which can be just as persuasive in the right context. Liberal arts colleges like Berea College, College of Wooster, and Clark University are known for appreciating students with strong leadership and international engagement, and they offer generous scholarships, including full rides for select applicants. Mid-sized universities such as Rollins College and Washington and Lee University also provide substantial merit aid and have a history of supporting international students with dynamic backgrounds. To strengthen your chances, focus on crafting a personal statement that connects your experiences to your goals in economics and global development, and apply early to schools that prioritize leadership in their scholarship criteria. You should also explore external scholarships like the Cameron Impact Scholarship and programs that reward Model UN excellence. With a strategic list and a compelling narrative, you can absolutely position yourself for success.
